Abstract
VICENTE, Marta; ANDRE, Paula and PEDRO, João Branco. A brief history of a Pombaline building: Analysis of interior changes in the context of urban transformations. CIDADES [online]. 2024, n.sp24, pp.1-23. Epub May 06, 2024. ISSN 2182-3030. https://doi.org/10.15847/cct.32659.
Regarding the perennially incomplete nature of cities and their ancient buildings, built heritage is linked to the condition of palimpsest. With the aim of contributing to more informed thinking and intervention, and constituting an instrument to achieve the sustainable development of cities, the question is how have old buildings adapted to social and economic changes?, and how do these adaptations relate to the social and economic context? A Pombaline building is taken as a case study to, from a long-term analysis, mainly based on archival sources, point out and systematize the changes to which it was the object, relating them to the transformations of the urban habitat where the building inserts. It is concluded that the transformations of domestic space are inseparable from the transformations of the habitat, reinforcing the need to study these changes over a long period of time to better identify and respond to contemporary challenges.
Keywords : Pombaline building; urban transformations; housing; palimpsest.
