Abstract
LIMA, Diogo et al. ARProsthesis: A Training Tool for the Rehabilitation of Upper Limb Amputees Using Augmented Reality. RISTI [online]. 2024, n.56, pp.82-97. Epub Dec 31, 2024. ISSN 1646-9895. https://doi.org/10.17013/risti.56.82-97.
This article presents an Augmented Reality (AR) application employing markerless tracking, designed for the training and rehabilitation of upper limb amputees who will use myoelectric prostheses. The absence of fiducial markers optimizes motion tracking, providing greater range of movement and enhancing the intuitiveness and effectiveness of training, thereby facilitating users’ functional adaptation to prosthetic devices. It is anticipated that, in the future, the system will foster a sense of embodiment of the virtual prosthesis. To achieve this goal, usability metrics were evaluated, with preliminary results indicating a more engaging training experience and rapid adaptation to virtual prosthesis manipulation. Despite the satisfactory usability observed, further research with larger and more diverse samples is necessary to validate the findings and consolidate the application’s potential to promote the desired sense of embodiment.
