Field work was carried out during the breading seasons of 1998 and 1999, with 51 sampling stations established at MNL (Leiria's National Forest), and 46 at PAT (Alto Tâmega's Pine Forests). We used both vocalizations broadcasting and direct observation as detection methods. Statistical models were generated by the Generalized Linear Models technique, and explanatory variables obtained by means of a GIS. Eight species of birds of prey were detected at MNL and six at PAT. The broadcasting technique was rather helpful on their detection, but a few modifications are needed in the future to maximize its efficacy. The models’ selected variables, regarding birds' greater presence's probability, were the existence or proximity of open areas and a minor forest fragmentation. The results show that in areas mainly assigned for timber production a more favourable forest management for birds of prey conservation should point to an equilibrium among stands different growth stages'.
